Displacement & Velocity Motion

One Dimensional Motion Bell Work Complete Problem 1: Page 44 Spi’s and CLE’s CLE 3231 Inq1 CLE 3231 Math 1 SPI 3231.1.1

Problem Solving

Objective: Describe Motion Calculate Displacement & Velocity Create Graphs/Interpret Velocity

How can we describe motion? One dimensional motion is the simplest form of motion Motion takes place over time We need a frame of reference to evaluate motion

What is a Frame of Reference? A Point at which you can measure changes in position. A system for specifying the precise location of objects in space and time

What is displacement? Change in Position Displacement = Final position – Initial Position ∆X = Xf - Xi

Key Concepts Displacement is not always equal to the distance traveled(See Page 42) Displacement can be positive or negative Demonstration

What is Velocity? motion that includes a direction and numerical value Average Velocity – displacement /time interval Instantaneous Velocity – velocity of an object at some specific point

Average Velocity & Displacement Formula Average Velocity = Change in Position(displacement) change in time(time interval)

Graphical Interpretation

Problem Solving Turn to Page 44; Sample Problem A Complete Problems 1-5
