1 Ooooh! Orang-utangs or is it Orangutans! In this workshop we will use the Orangutan as a focus for literacy. Strategies and tools which engage students in learning more about orangutans will be explored. It will also include a unit of work focusing on Melbourne Zoo partnership with Debbie Martyr in Sumatra, and the corresponding work by a group of students in Year 4

2 The best pedagogic tasks involve some kind of information gap - That is a situation whereby different members within a group, or individuals in a pair, hold different or incomplete information, so that the only way the task can be completed is for this information to be shared.

3 Visual Literacy - harnessing oral language Talk is necessary for the task A group task should REQUIRE, not simply ENCOURAGE, talk Research your topic and make a list of facts Carefully select pictures that match your list. Each picture should contain some information but try to ensure that each picture is different. Write a short description and paste onto the back. Give students a picture and ask them to work out what information can be obtained from it. Then turn the picture over to check if they are correct. Discuss what their picture is about with a classmate Depending on the language focus ‘I learnt’ … Each child should have some specific information to be shared.

The pair seemed to be facing a certain death as a gang of hunters surrounded them in Borneo, keen to cash in on the palm oil plantations' bid to be rid of the animals.
