BOOST The Leopards professional Dodge ball team is running a promotion to attract fans to their Dodge ball games. The first 500 people in attendance will receive either a mini-Dodge ball with the Leopards logo or a Leopards t-shirt. The mini-Dodge balls will cost the team 2.50 each and the t-shirts will cost the team 1.75 each. If the team plans to give away 500 items total and they can only spend $965; how many of each item will the team give away?

Think about what prior knowledge you want to bring in from previous learning. Think about what new knowledge will be presented in the up coming unit. Search for tasks that encourage the desired recall of knowledge, but also lend themselves to the new content that will be introduced. One of the best ways to create launch tasks is to find a problem on the internet or in the text book, and then remove any scaffolding or guiding instructions that may be present.

When the freshman class officers at Sturgis High School were making plans for the annual end-of-year class party, they had a number of variables to consider… * the number of students purchasing tickets and attending the party * the price charged for tickets * the price charged for tickets *expenses, including food, a DJ, security, and clean-up
9
If this party is to be a fundraising event for the class, what price should be set in order to raise the most money? If this party is to promote camaraderie among the class, what price should be set in order to throw the party without losing money?

The Brown family went on a camping trip. Their campsite was located 3 miles east and 7 miles north of the ranger station. As the clouds rolled in, they decided their campsite was located too close to the river, which flows directly west to east-8 miles north of the ranger station, so they moved to a new site. The new campsite was located 7 miles east and 2 miles south of the ranger station. How far did they have to move their campsite to avoid the possible flooding river?

SUPER BOOST SUPER BOOST The family decided that to save energy from walking back and forth the entire distance they could create a pass-off point halfway between the two campsites and only carry their equipment halfway then pass it off to another member of their party to carry the rest of the way. Where would the pass off point be located? The Smith family was also camping along the river 2 miles due west of the Brown family campsite. They also decided to move their campsite to avoid the rising river; in order to maintain their distance from the Brown family and move sufficiently up hill, they needed to move in a path that was parallel to the Brown’s and just as far. Where will the Smith family’s new campsite located?
