film distribution
2
What is film distribution A film distributor is an independent company or occasionally an individual, which acts as the final manager between a film production company, and a film exhibitor to the final production of the film. In the film business, the term "distribution" is the marketing aspect and circulation of movies in theatres, and for home viewing (DVD, Video-On-Demand, Download, Television etc). The distributor is responsible for ensuring a full line of film advertising material is available on each film which will help the exhibitor attract the largest possible audience, create such advertising if it is not provided by the production company, and arrange for the physical delivery of the advertising items selected by the exhibitor at intervals prior to the opening day.

The Film distribution process Sales and Marketing A film can only be launched once so the first weekend in the cinemas is crucial to attract customers and further its progress. The majority of films generate 30% or more of its entire box office during the first three days so the campaign is very important to get right. The film distribution need to think about a lot of things during the development of a campaign, these include: the audience; the story and characters of the film and how they entice the audience; if the film delivers and justifies the cost and risk of a theatrical release and similar films of the same audience. Competition This is a key consideration in the film distribution. They need to consider: Which films are other distributors likely to release at the same time or during the following weeks that have a similar targeted audience or genre of film; if there is space in the market to something different – counter programming. Things they need to consider: If the film is a prospective mass market blockbuster or specialized film for more discrete audiences Is there any star power among the cast? What were the leads stars last roles and how successful were they? Is the film made by a ‘name’ director? Are any cast members available for UK/international publicity or to attend a premiere.

Releases Saturation release: This is where the film is released ‘at cinemas everywhere’ and may open simultaneously on 1000 screens UK-wide playing at two or more screens per multiplex. Usually deployed for ‘tentpole’ titles such as large scale sequels or star led holiday releases, this helps to accommodate mass audiences eager to see a film at the earliest opportunity. Specialized release: These are films that aren't as well known and low budgeted. Foreign language films or revived classic may comprise of 25 prints or fewer. The film may only be played in selected screens in London and some university towns where local audiences are known to favour such titles before touring more widely over the following weeks. Older audiences may respond better having seen the film advertised on television or in the press while for younger audiences it is more appropriate to promote the film online, on radio stations or bus shelter panels.
