Section 3-2 Electricity, Magnetism and Motion
2
N.3.2.1. Explain how electrical energy can be transformed into mechanical energy. N.3.2.2. Describe how a Galvanometer works. N.3.2.3. Describe what an electric motor does. Objectives
3
Do you remember the Conservation of Matter Law? What does it say? Matter is not created or destroyed, only changed. So what do you think the Conservation of Energy might say? Energy is not created or destroyed, only changed. Conservation Of Energy
4
Electrical Energy And Motion Electrical To Motion When a wire carrying a current is placed in a magnetic field, the electrical energy is converted to mechanical energy. Motion To Electrical When a wire is moved through a magnetic field, and electric current is induced and mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy.
5
Creating Current When a wire moves through a magnetic field it induces a current in the wire. This is call Electrical Induction. Mechanical energy is changed into electrical energy.
6
Space Station Tether Experiment The Shuttle Columbia pulled a conducting tether through Earth’s magnetic field to create electricity.
7
Creating Current A typical dam uses gravity to pull water through a turbine which turns a generator and produces electricity.
8
Creating Motion Electricity in a motor can be converted into rotational mechanical motion. This device is called a motor.
9
It Works In Both Directions Generator What does a generator convert? A generator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. Motor What does a motor convert? A motor convert electrical energy to mechanical energy.
10
Galvanometer
