About my Mentor My Mentor is Michelle Reeves. She graduated from Wren High School in 2004. She is 26 years of age. She is the Center Services Manager at Piedmont Women’s Center. She is going on her 7 th year at the center.

Statistics Teen pregnancy rates have dropped since 2007. 409,840 infants born to teens 15-19 years of age in 2009. The United States has one of the highest birth rates. Pregnancy is higher for teens who live in poverty, have one or both parents absent from the home, parents with low education, or struggle in school themselves.

Statistics (cont.) A sexually active teen whom doesn’t use contraceptives have a 90% chance of getting pregnant within a year. 85% of teen pregnancies are unintended. Some teens become pregnant to fill a void in their lives. 75% of girls and half of boys report that girls who have sex do so because their boyfriends want them to. Every 3.5 seconds a young person is infected with a STD. 1/4 th being girls aged 15-19.

Statistics (cont.) 3/10 girls become pregnant before the age of 20. Most teens delay on prenatal care with fear of telling others, delaying pregnancy test, or even denial. More then ½ of teen mothers never graduate from high school. More the 75% of unmarried teen mothers go on welfare within 5 years of their first baby.

Statistics (cont.) 8/10 th of teen fathers do not marry the mother of their first child. Typically 80% of abortion minded women who see their child on an ultrasound choose life. Little Steps is a non-judgmental environment for pregnant teens. It is located in Greenville, S.C. and founded by Mandy Black.

Hands-on Project For my hands-on Project, I volunteered at Piedmont Women’s Center, Grove Road. I helped copy and file papers, restocked pamphlets, and cleaned around the office and waiting room. Even though I was unable to sit in on an actual client case interview, Jennifer took me back during our free time and went over everything she asked/talked about with the expectant mother.

What I’ve Learned Some teenagers become pregnant to fill a void in their lives. The Untied States has one of the highest birth rates for teenage pregnancy. Every 3.5 seconds a teen is infected with an STD. 8/10 th of teen fathers do not marry the mother of their first child. There are many organizations such as, Litter Steps and Piedmont Women's Center, to help the teen parents.
