2 O RGANIZATIONAL C HALLENGES IN THE C LASSROOM - S TUDENTS Papers get lost Messy notebooks What are we doing now? Don’t know how/what to study for the test Missed days = missed material Lost logs = major crisis

3 O RGANIZATIONAL C HALLENGES IN THE C LASSROOM - T EACHERS Planning “meaningful” activities Having enough time for students to learn by using and doing, not just by copying Piles and piles of LOGS!!!

4 W HAT IS AN I NTERACTIVE S TUDENT N OTEBOOK

5 W HAT MAKES IT AN ISN? Organization! Table of Contents Every page has a title, date, and number Right side – teacher input Left side – student output Graphic organizers and colors on input side Unit tabs All papers are glued or taped into the notebook

7 ISN – A DVANTAGES Organization! Every student has same information/activity on same page – easy to make up lost work Students know what we’re doing now and where to do it. Papers don’t get lost Logs get checked on the spot Students have a lasting log of their progress – log, test, or junior high Students essentially create a text book they can use to review in subsequent years (read: Module F test)

8 ISN - D ISADVANTAGES “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” “But my handwriting is too big!” “Why should I copy it now? I’ll get it from so- and-so later”. “I lost my notebook” “I didn’t know we were supposed to copy it onto another paper and submit it!” “Who has glue/scissors/colored pens?” Periodic checking – doesn’t always happen
