2 Title: Religion What is religion? Religion is an organized system of beliefs. Themes of Religion: - morality (right & wrong) or justice “Code of Conduct” - divinity – a deity “God” or deities “Gods” - A doctrine of salvation - A written text (Use of sacred stories) III. Types: Monotheism – Belief in one god. “Mono” = one (Example: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) Polytheism – Belief in many gods. “Poly” = Many (Example: Ancient Greek: Aphrodite goddess of love & Mars God of war. Henotheism – Worship one god, but others deities might exist or have power. (Example: Hinduism) Atheism – A denial of a belief in a God or Gods.

Monotheism - Jews believe in only one God. Basic Jewish Beliefs: - Belief in one God. - Belief in justice, or treating people fairly. - Belief in religious law or moral law. III. Characteristics: Mosaic Law – Jewish law which follows the Ten Commandments (Bad things like steal, murder, or lie.) Torah – Most sacred text of Judaism. Rabbis – Religious teachers. Basics of Christianity: (PAGE ALL) - Based on the life and teachings of Jesus, as presented in the New Testament of the Bible (Most sacred text of Christianity). - Three Branches of Christianity: Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestantism. - Schism “SHI-zm” – Christianity splits; Catholicism & Protestantism because of corruption. Ex: Indulgences III. Characteristics: Connection to Judaism – Christians believe that Jesus is the messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Bible, the Torah. Salvation– Jesus was resurrected from the dead to open heaven to those who believe in him. It’s Growth– During the Age of Discovery, Christianity spread through missionary “work.” (Crusades – take over countries /Kill lots of nonbelievers

7 Title: Islam Monotheism – Muslims believe in only one God.
Beliefs of Islam: - Islam literally means “submission to God”. (Purpose of life) - Major Prophets: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. - Muslims believe that God or “Allah,” finally sent Muhammad to tell the truth about God to the world. III. Characteristics: Five Pillars of Islam– Follow these beliefs by: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, alms giving, being good and refuting evil, and love. Koran (Qur’an) – Most sacred text of Islam. Islamic Law – Moral law over virtually all aspects of life / society. Salvation – Believe in God and once judged on “Judgment Day” you will go to Jannah, a place of joy and bliss. Factoid: Islam, Judaism and Christianity, believes angels exist. The Arabic word for angel (malak) means "messenger", like its counterparts in Hebrew (malakh) and Greek (angelos).
