Look for vocabulary in the slides! Directions: When you see a new vocabulary word, write it down and raise your hand. We will discuss what we think it means with a partner. We will check our answers by using our book dictionaries Record your guesses and the correct definition with a partner Each person should have his/her own paper

Judaism Judaism started 4,000 years ago They are often called “the Chosen People” There are about 12 million Jews left in the world. When they live in different places, it is called a Diaspora. Can you name 4 regions with high Jewish populations? Take 5 minutes to discuss with a partner. Here is a map to help you.

Prophets - Abraham Abraham was the first prophet. He lived 4,000 years ago in modern-day Iraq, near the Euphrates river. He established the idea of monotheism. He did not like polytheism.

Prophets? Who do you think is the second prophet? Take a minute to discuss with a partner. Write your answer down.

Prophets - Moses Moses is their second prophet. He led Jews out of Egypt because they were slaves and he believed they should have freedom. Their great exile was called the Exodus. He introduced the Ten Commandments. They are found in the Torah.

Ten Commandments Can you name the Ten Commandments? Take 5 minutes. Work with a partner to see if you can name the Ten Commandments.

Holy Book - Torah The Jewish holy book called the Torah. It has the first five chapters of the Bible: Genesis Exodus Leviticus Deuteronomy Numbers

Jewish Kings Jews lived in two different places – Israel and Judah. Kings always tried to keep them united. Some Jewish Kings include: Saul David Solomon

Celebration Rosh Ha-shanah – the New Year. Yom Kippur – Day of Atonement (making up for bad things you have done). They pray in a synagogue to ask for forgiveness.

Kosher What does it mean? Have you heard that word before? Where? Take a minute to discuss with your partner.

Kosher Kosher means that the animal has been killed a certain way and is clean enough to eat. Jewish people do not eat pig because they do not feel it is kosher.

Timeline Directions: Using the notes from last class and your knowledge of BCE timelines, create a timeline of the four religions we have studied from oldest to newest. Take 10-15 minutes to work on this with your partner. Present your answer to the class as a pair.
