3. Progress in the advanced phase In the first thematic sub-phase, long term evaluation test for a prototype application was started in October 2006. Evaluation items are to evaluate the following mechanisms : i) Software updating through an application portal ii) Gathering required data from different data sources

Example of application (SATAID : Satellite Animation and Interactive Diagnosis)

WIS Prototypes Advanced Phase Evaluation test for Prototype application (SATAID) Oct. 2006 Contribution to WIS implementation May 2007 Mar. 2007 WIS VPN Pilot Project in RA II & V Positivereplies Survey by questionnaire Prototype system development (at JMA) Semi-operation ServiceProvision (SATAID at JMA)

4. Future Activities 4.1 Further promoting the advanced phase (1) Reporting observational data Prototype web input interface was already tested in October 2005. In cooperation with CMA’s development team, the following works are planned: # development of software for metadata creation and BUFR conversion # improvement of input interface considering comments from participants Two thematic sub-phases are re-scheduled with coordination of key players.

(2) Cooperation with UNIDART (Data Portal) CMA, JMA and KMA could access successfully to the UNIDART portal through a VPN link in cooperation with DWD, and their data servers have been prepared to join the DATA GRID environment. The following works are planned: # Preparation of datasets with metadata # Extension to further cooperators in the project

4.2 Contribution to WIS implementation (1) Technical consulting body on VPN The project will fill the role of a technical consulting body on VPN data communications for WIS semi-operation components in all Regions. The project continues to provide empirical outcomes and technical tips to WIS community. (2) Prototype mechanisms at WIS application level The project will develop prototype mechanisms at WIS application level and their partial elements. They will be verified through participants’ trial use. (3) Capacity building for participants in WIS semi-operation The project will provide the participants with better environment so that they can gain experiences on use of the VPN and WIS services on a trial basis.
