What is Crohn’s Disease?  Crohn’s Disease is one of a group of disorders collectively referred to as inflammatory bowel disease. Crohn’s Disease causes painful inflammation in your digestive tract and usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine or colon.

History  Named after an American gastroenterologist, Dr. Burrill B. Crohn. The first description of this condition was earlier made by the Italian physician Giovanni Battista Morgagni in 1769, when he diagnosed a young man with a chronic, debilitating illness and diarrhea.

Causes  Although there are many theories about what causes Crohn’s disease, none of them have been proven.

Signs and Symptoms  Abdominal cramps and pain  FeverLoose, watery or frequent bowel movements  Loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss  During periods of active symptoms, you also may experience:  Fatigue  Joint pain  Skin problems

Continued  Fissures, or tears in the lining of the anus  Fistulas, a tunnel that connects the intestine to the bladder, vagina or skin  Oral or skin lesions

Cures for Chron’s disease  There are no cures for Chron’s disease but it can be managed with medicine and diet.

Prevention  To lower stress on the digestive tract by having small, frequent meals. It is better to eat 5-6 small meals in a day than 2-3 large meals.  Adopt a low fiber, but well-balanced diet. A diet high in fiber may irritate inflamed intestinal walls.  Eat ripe bananas, apples, curd, and pureed vegetables since they help to maintain optimum intestinal flora.  Eliminate wheat, wheat products, and lactose-containing foods from your diet. Though eliminating these foods does not directly ease the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, it will ease the symptoms of indigestion and bloating.  Because stress can worsen the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and slow breathing may be helpful.  Avoid stimulants like tobacco and caffeine, exercise regularly, maintain a positive attitude, and get good sleep to help prevent Crohn’s disease.

Prevention/treatment  Quit smoking people that smoke smoke experience more acute symptoms and frequent flare-ups than nonsmoking patients.  Eatting a lot of fruits and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables will provide essential vitamins and nutrients.
