“Increasing road safety and transport efficiency through improved professional competence” Moscow, 20 March 2015 Patrick Philipp, Head - IRU Academy

2 Every job depends on road transport

3 Every item is carried by road at a certain point

4 EC recognises the key role of road transport as a catalyst to trade Road transport is part of the lifeblood of the European economy and single market. It delivers goods across Europe fast, efficiently, flexibly and cheaply. Road transport is a vital economic sector in its own right, employing about 5 million people across the EU and generating close to 2% of its GDP. Road transport is a tool for reviving growth through the enhancement of competitiveness and the creation of jobs. former

5 Road Transport accounts for nearly 75% of all delivered goods in the EU and 70% in the United States Transport of passengers and goods by road will remain 100% dependent on the services of skilled and motivated drivers Commercial road transport undertakings around the world have suffered persistently from shortages of skilled drivers; most acutely during periods of economic growth and low unemployment State of Play

6 1. Good infrastructure 2. Harmonised legislative frameworks to facilitate trade and international road transport 3. Service excellence Necessary conditions to allow road transport to drive trade, hence economic development

7 Industry and societal challenges

8 Road Safety – a global issue

9 Road Safety – A regional challenge Source: http://gamapserver.who.int/gho/interactive_charts/road_safety/road_traffic_deaths2/atlas.html

10 Road Safety – High Priority

11 Road Safety – Specific Strategy The IRU supports all measures that improve road safety if they effectively target the main causes of accidents involving professional vehicles

12 Accident Analysis ETAC – A Scientific Study Results confirmed by other studies

13 Focus on Priorities – Road Safety – Main Cause: The Human Factor Investigation of 624 accidents showed the main cause of the accident is the human error Source: EU, IRU However, from the 85.2% linked to human error, 75% were caused by other road users!

14 Safety The Population The Environment The Economy Damages to:

15 Policies are Reaping Benefits

26 Crash Prevention Programme 1-day classroom-based programme on crash prevention, compatible with periodical training format Highly visual combines simulation playbacks, on-board camera footage, and various videos Highly practical Evocative real-life crash cases illustrate the theory Highly engaging Focus on group discussions and crash case analysis Story-based The course is introduced by the story of a fatal crash, told by the truck driver Includes next generation truck simulator software license

27 IRU Academy Interactive Programme on Safe Loading and Cargo Securing Interactive simulation environment Calculator: Specific and practical advices Latest International Reference Standard EN 12195-1:2010 Industry reference guidelines

28 Focus on Priorities – Eco-Driving ? An ECO driving module combining technology and the latest training techniques that will improve efficiency and safety for the commercial sector; Train-the-Trainer & Driver training that have been specifically designed for the road transport sector and contribute to: important financial savings in fuel and fleet costs, significant reduction of CO 2 emissions and improve fuel- efficiency, indirect impact on the reduction of the road risks, accidents and casualties.

29 2,315 drivers trained Average fuel reduction of more than 5%* 7,731 tonnes saved in road transport CO 2 emissions* 3,5mio EUR saved in fuel costs* ECOeffect project results * 5.14% - The calculation is based on the fuel data reported from 42% of drivers’ trained from the following companies: Duvenbeck (RO), HSF Logistics (PL) and Vive Transport (PL), for a period of at least 8 months. ECOeffect TRAINING SYSTEM
