Counting something one by one. Example: I went to the candy store and counted all the gumballs in the machine.

To determine a number of something by counting the evidence it left behind. Example: I found 5 shedding of a snake, so I can imply that there were 5 snakes there.

When you count how many organisms there are in an area then times it by how many areas there is Example: I counted how many ground hogs there is in an acre and there is 1000 acres then I times the number of ground hogs in that one acre by the number of total acres.

By marking the thing and let it go then come back and see how many are marked Example: I marked fish then came back a week later and see how many were marked.
