INTRODUCTION THE TECHNICAL TEXTILE SECTOR IN INDIA IS LIKELY TO GROW BY 11% YEAY ON YEAR AND IS EXPECTED TO ATTAIN A MARKET SIZE OF $14.8 BILLION BY FROM THE CURRENT SIZE OF $9.9 BILLION PRESENTLY MAJOR PRODUCERS OF TECHNICAL TEXTILES ARE IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES OUT OF WHICH USA, EUROPE AND JAPAN COMPRISE ABOUT 70 %. ALTHOUGH, GLOBALLY THERE HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANT GROWTH OF TECHNICAL TEXTILES IN THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES, LARGE INVESTMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE RECENT PAST IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES ALSO IN THIS HIGHLY SPECIALIZED AND TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN AREA.

THE PRODUCTION OF TECHNICAL TEXTILES IN INDIA IS MINISCULE AS IT REQUIRES HUGE INVESTMENTS FOR DEVELOPING THE SPECIALIZED FIBRE FOR TECHNICAL TEXTILES, TECHNOLOGY KNOW-HOW AND PRODUCTION FACILITIES. IT IS IN THIS CONTEXT THAT THE ROLE OF STANDARDS FOR VARIOUS SPECIALIZED DESIGN, FUNCTIONAL AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THESE TEXTILES NEEDS NO EMPHASIS.

WHAT IS TECHNICAL TEXTILE ?
TECHNICAL TEXTILES CAN BE DEFINED AS TEXTILE MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED PRIMARILY FOR THEIR TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE AND FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES RATHER THAN FOR AESTHETICS OR DECORATIVE CHARACTERISTICS.

TX 30 WAS LOOKING AFTER STANDARDIZATION WORK RELATED TO TESTING AND SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GEO-TEXTILES MADE OF POLYESTER, POLYPROPYLENE, JUTE, COIR AND OTHER FIBRES HAVING WOVEN/NON-WOVEN/KNITTED STRUCTURE WHILE WRD 25 MAINLY COVERS GEO-MEMBRANES/GEO-GRIDS/GEO-COMPOSITES AND ALLIED PRODUCTS (NATURAL AND POLYMERIC) FOR RIVER VALLEY AND OTHER CIVIL ENGINEERING RELATED APPLICATIONS.

SINCE THE AREA OF MEDICAL TEXTILES INVOLVES HEALTH AND SAFETY OF THE USER, THEIR STANDARDIZATION IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE AND VARIOUS PERFORMANCE AND FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS ARE TO BE APPROPRIATELY STANDARDIZED IN LINE WITH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS AT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. CONCLUSION IN MOST INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES, THE TREND IN VARIOUS SECTORS OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY INDICATES THAT THE USE OF CONVENTIONAL TEXTILES HAS REACHED A STATIC LEVEL AND THEIR MANUFACTURE HAS BECOME HIGHLY COMPETITIVE AND OFTEN UNVIABLE. THE RECENT FOCUS HAS, THEREFORE, BEEN ON THE VALUE-ADDED TECHNICAL TEXTILES THAT HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO MEET FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS FOR PRECISION APPLICATIONS. IN ORDER TO MEET THE TARGET OF $14.8 BILLION BY FROM THE CURRENT SIZE OF $9.9 BILLION, INDIA HAS TO INCUR SUBSTANTIAL INVESTMENT IN INFRASTRUCTURE, TECHNOLOGY, R & D AND STANDARDIZATION AND IT IS HOPED THAT INDIA WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NEW OPPORTUNITY IN THIS AREA ARISING DUE TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES WHICH WILL PAVE PATH FOR THE FUTURE. IN VIEW OF HEALTH AND PUBLIC SAFETY, THE INDIAN STANDARDS ON PROTECH AND MEDTECH COULD BE MADE MANDATORY.
