Activity Objective – Discuss with partner and determine the following; What is Earth Science? Why do we study Earth Science? How: Make a list with the person sitting next to you write down all of the items that you think include and make up earth science.

What is Earth Science? Earth Science is the name for the group of sciences that deals with Earth and its neighbors. Geology Astronomy Oceanography Meteorology

Geology Geology – “study of the earth” Two different areas of geology Physical Geology Historical geology

Astronomy Astronomy – is the study of the universe.

Oceanography Oceanography - is the study of the composition and movements of seawater.

Meteorology Meteorology - is the study of the atmosphere.

Special Branches Environmental Science – the study of how humans interact with the environment. Ecology – the study of living organisms and their nonliving environment. Geochemistry – combines the study of geology and chemistry. Ex. Geochemist study the composition of rocks.

Special Branches cont. Physical geographers – study the surface of the earth. Cartographers – make maps of the surfaces studied by physical geographers.

Spheres of the Earth Geosphere – all of the solid Earth. Hydrosphere – all of Earth’s water. Atmosphere – all of the gases surrounding the Earth. Biosphere – all living organisms on Earth.

Homework/Classwork 1. Think about how all the spheres of the Earth are connected. 2. Compile a list of objects that exist in each of the earth’s spheres. 3. Pick one item from each of the 4 spheres. Describe how the other spheres would be different if you removed one (not all 4) item completely.
