Essential Skills are foundational skills that all students need for success in college, the workplace, and in their communities The Essential Skills are: ■ Read and comprehend a variety of text ■ Write clearly and accurately ■ Apply mathematics in a variety of settings ■ Listen actively and speak clearly and coherently ■ Think critically and analytically ■ Use technology to learn, live, and work ■ Demonstrate civic and community engagement ■ Demonstrate global literacy ■ Demonstrate personal management and teamwork skills

Local Performance Assessments - Opportunity to Learn Students in grades 3 – 8 and once in high school must complete one local performance assessment each in writing, speaking, math problem solving, and scientific inquiry Districts may use work sample scored with official state scoring guide or other comparable measures Provide access to content, resources, and instruction

Essential Skills - Opportunity to Show Proficiency Provide opportunity for OAKS, other standardized tests, and work samples Provide multiple options and multiple opportunities Districts must document student scores for all assessment options

Use of existing Data Teams or PLC’s Groups within a school that have been working with data and setting priorities will be instrumental in local Essential Skill plans Professional Development Assure staff has knowledge, skills, and resources to instruct content, administer assessments, design work samples and score work samples Record Keeping and Data Collection Keep accurate records of student progress Provide data required on Cumulative ADM report
