5 Historical Perspective on Education in El Salvador  Education in El Salvador is only required for 12 years, beginning at the age of 4. Afterwards, most students who cannot afford to go to school, for many reasons, drop out and immediately begin working to provide for their families. However, teachers are well respected in El Salvador because a lot of them have a positive impact on children.

6 Education Structure  Preschool 4-6 years old  Primary 7-12 years old  Lower Secondary 13-15 years old  Upper Secondary 16-18 years old  Grading System: 10 point numerical scale to grade student performance (Global Road Warrior).

7 Education Structure  School is free for preschool through Lower Secondary.  Uniforms are required at most schools and are not provided by the government all the time.  More than half of schools in El Salvador are private.  Public school are really poor and do not provide classes everyday because teachers are not paid well enough to have a secure method of transportation.

8 Structure of School Majority of students walk to school. Some may take buses if they can afford it (Interview). The Salvadoran academic year runs from January to October (Culture Gram). A regular class day consist of note-taking, group work, and maybe a quiz (Global Road Warrior).  Attendance is required at higher prestige school daily but at the public and more poorer schools, teachers tend to cancel classes (Global Road Warrior).
