1 Creative Writing Poetry

2 Poetry Blank Verse-is a literary device defined as un-rhyming verse written in iambic pentameter. In poetry and prose, it has a consistent meter with 10 syllables in each line (pentameter); where, unstressed syllables are followed by stressed ones and five of which are stressed but do not rhyme. It is also known as un-rhymed iambic pentameter. Iambic Pentameter-When put together, iambic pentameter may be defined as a line of verse consisting of five metrical feet where each foot consists of an unstressed syllable and a stressed syllable. Examples. William Shakespeare was famous for using iambic pentameter in his sonnets.

3 Blank Verse I saw you yesterday, your features grinned,
Example of Iambic Pentameter video So what does an iambic pentameter look like that is not Shakespeare? I saw you yesterday, your features grinned, some silken scarf was waving in the blue, I thought of what the rains could not rescind; our images, that in the fields imbue.

4 Blank Verse So now that we know what iambic pentameter is we can start looking at what that looks like in the Blank Verse category. Something there is that doesn’t love a wall. That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it, And spills the upper boulders in the sun; (Mending Walls by Robert Frost)

5 Blank Verse –You Try So write something that is 2 lines long using a non rhyming Iambic Pentameter.

6 Blank Verse Features of blank verse include. .
1. Blank verse poetry has no fixed number of lines. 2. It has a conventional meter that is used for verse drama and long narrative poems. 3. It is often used in descriptive and reflective poems and dramatic monologues — the poems in which a single character delivers his thoughts in the form of a speech. 4. Blank verse can be composed in any kind of meter, such as iamb, trochee, spondee and dactyl.

7 Blank Verse The various types of blank verse
Iamb pentameter blank verse (unstressed/stressed syllables) 2. Trochee blank verse (stressed/unstressed syllables) 3. Anapest blank verse (unstressed/unstressed/stressed syllables) 4. Dactyl blank verse (stressed/unstressed/unstressed syllables) We really don’t need to use all of these but it is a part of blank verse writing if you want to use it.

8 Blank Verse Now we’re going to write using this prompt. Don’t worry about making it poetic or making it anything. . . Just free write using this prompt. The garden was overgrown now. . . Remember that this is just a free write, use up a half to a full page depending on how big your letters are.

9 Blank Verse

10 Blank Verse Now we’re going to turn your free write into a blank verse, Iambic Pentameter poem Take the first line for example. . . The garden was overgrown now . . . Make this 10 syllables The massive garden was overgrown now . . . Or The elegant garden was overgrown. . .

11 Blank Verse Rhyming is not necessary, but it can rhyme if you want.
In these types of writing you will see things like imagery, connotation, denotation, personification, etc. used. You will see more analogy and metaphor than small writing tricks. Remember this as you create your poem out of your free-write. This needs to be about a half to a full page.
