MD Voluntary Content Standards Topic B. Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities Indicator –1. Write and identify expressions –Objective Represent numeric quantities using operational symbols (+, -) and whole numbers to 25. Indicator –2. Identify, write, and solve equations and inequalities –Objectives Represent relationships using appropriate relational symbols (>, <, =) and operational symbols (+, -) with whole numbers to 100. http://mdk12.org/instruction/curriculum/mat hematics/standard1/grade2.html

Maryland Teacher Technology Standards Standard II: Communication A. Use technology effectively and appropriately to interact electronically. B. Use technology to communicate information in a variety of formats. Standard II: Communication Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction Design, implement and assess learning experiences that incorporate use of technology in the curriculum-related instructional activity to support understanding, inquiry, problem-solving, communication or collaboration. Standard VI: Assistive Technologies Understand human, equity, and developmental issues surrounding the use of assistive technology to enhance student learning performance and apply that understanding to practice. http://www.mttsonline.org/standards/

Intended Use Lesson will be presented to the class as a whole. Activity will be completed individually to assess and practice the student’s understanding of the inequality lesson. The worksheet will be completed as a homework assignment to reinforce student understanding of inequalities.

Student Goals and Objectives Students will be able to: Write and identify expressions. Solve inequalities.

Introduction to Activity Teacher will introduce and the inequality lesson to the students. Teacher will present multiple examples to the class demonstrating inequalities.

Advantages for Using PowerPoint It offers a visual aid to learning the material. It incorporates interactive learning into the lesson. It will keep students actively engaged in the lesson.

Student Handout Worksheet

Appropriateness According to the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum, inequalities is an appropriate topic for second grade students.

Inequalities!!

What are inequalities? Inequalities are mathematical expressions which shows that two quantities are not equal.

Examples of Inequalities = Greater ThanLess Than Equal To ><

Examples of Greater Than 6 2 1510 2322 4 + 32+2 10+812+2 25-611-5

Examples of Less Than 910 2125 1418 20 - 921-8 6+910+5 5-25-1

Examples of Equals To 12 = 1215 + 6 = 19 + 2 25 = 25 20 - 6 = 18 - 4 4 = 4 13 + 8 = 11 + 10

Play The Game! Each student is going to play the Inequalities Game individually. Make sure to work quietly and raise your hand if you need assistance.

Meet Freddie the Fish. He is a very hungry fish, but he is also greedy. He always wants to eat as much as he can. Help Freddie decide which number is greater by opening his mouth toward the larger number. Click the arrow button to move on!

Remember… This symbol means GREATER THAN This symbol means LESS THAN This symbol means EQUAL TO

Good Luck!

Let’s start out with small numbers… 4 __ 6

Great Job! You are correct! Keep up the good work!

Oops! Try again! Go back and double-check that answer.

Let’s try some larger numbers… 18 __ 12

Great Job! You are correct! Keep up the good work!

Oops! Try again! Go back and double-check that answer.

Let’s try some addition problems… 7 + 6 __ 12 + 1

Great Job! You are correct! Keep up the good work!

Oops! Try again! Go back and double-check that answer.

Let’s try some harder addition problems… 20 + 5 __ 18 + 1

Great Job! You are correct! Keep up the good work!

Oops! Try again! Go back and double-check that answer.

Let’s try some subtraction problems… 15 - 6 __ 20 - 11

Great Job! You are correct! Keep up the good work!

Oops! Try again! Go back and double-check that answer.

Great Job! You filled up Freddie’s belly!
