Page 4 Brainy Technology File System module is the Brain of StorageFile System module is the Brain of Storage Storage is the plain I/O device (Body), no intelligenceStorage is the plain I/O device (Body), no intelligence The file system module (Brain) manages data on the storageThe file system module (Brain) manages data on the storage Replication without going through File System module is brainlessReplication without going through File System module is brainless

Page 5 Brainy File System Redundancy Brainy File System based Replication do the file replication through the file system modules on both systems. The file systems modules update the already mounted storages with the real-time replicated information. Brainy File System Replication AP Primary Storage File System (Brain) Disk Driver AP File System (Brain) Disk Driver Backup Storage AP

Page 6 Conventional Block Level Redundancy Conventional block level replication, software and hardware, replicate raw data between hardware storages without going through the file system (the brain), hence the backup storage is a idle, spare tire. Neither system can use it during replication. Hardware block Level Replication (brainless ) AP Primary Storage File System (Brain) Block Level Replication Disk Driver AP File System (Brain) Disk Driver Backup Storage AP Software block Level Replication (brainless) File System has no knowledge of what data is replicated to backup storage, so can’t mount and use the backup storage while replication is going on ??? Block Level Replication

Page 7 Conventional System Level Redundancy Clustering systems Conventional System level redundancy, Clustering Systems uses two nodes connected to a shared storage. But only the Primary node is allowed to read/write the storage, the secondary node is idle. It can read/write the storage only when the Primary node is down. AP Shared Storage File System (Brain) Disk Driver AP File System (Brain) Disk Driver AP File System on Secondary node has no knowledge of what data is written to the shared storage by the Primary node Primary node, activeSecondary node, Idle Only one node is allowed to read/write the shared storage, usually, the Primary node ???

Page 8 Global/Cluster File Systems Global File Systems enables multiple nodes to access a shared storage for High Performance Computing on the SAN environment in a single location. AP Shared Storage Global File System (Brain) Disk Driver AP Global File System (Brain) Disk Driver AP Active node Shared Storage is a single point of failure

Page 9 Bi-directional file system replication Active Storage AP MFS Disk Driver AP Storage MFS Disk Driver AP MFS’ file system based replication technology enables both systems and their storages to be active. The applications on both systems can read and write the same file at the same time. The two systems can be deployed on geographically-dispersed locations. Mirror File System (MFS)

Page 10 MFS Load balancing Disaster Prevention – when one server is down, switch over to another one immediately, no cumbersome DR is necessary Business Continuity is guaranteed, no service disruption Storage Geo-Cluster Systems (MFS) Storage MFS Load Balancer Active

Page 11 Interoperable -- Two nodes can be different systems Storage systems can be different Full utilization of hardware/software investment - no expensive “spare tires” Brainy & Fast replication -- Replication in Kernel file system module Advantages

Page 12 Systems can be on geographically dispersed locations separated by hundreds of miles Greatly reduced network traffic -- go to your nearest server Immediately switch over to another running system at different location when a system is down A Disaster Prevention solution, not DR -- no cumbersome disaster recovery procedures Advantages

Page 13Summary Conventional block level replication is brainless Conventional Clustering system is waste of resources File system based replication technology is the real solutions for many IT problems MFS is the game changing technology that offers many advantages over existing technologies
