Conductors and Insulators of Heat

Conductor: An object that allows heat energy to flow freely through it. Examples: aluminum foil copper wire steel glass silverware

When do people use conductors of heat? Cook Food Boil water Can you think of more uses???

Insulator: An object that does not allow heat energy to flow freely through it. Examples: plastic wood rubber cloth paper

When do people use insulators of heat? Coats/JacketsIce ChestOven mitts

Sometimes… Animals use stored fat to insulate their bodies during the winter Can you think of more uses???

Temperature: The measure of heat in an environment, recorded in degrees Celsius.

Boiling point: The temperature point at which a liquid turns into a gas. Boiling occurs at 100° Celsius.

Freezing point: The temperature point at which a liquid turns into a solid. Freezing occurs at 0° Celsius.

Melting point: The temperature point at which a solid turns into a liquid. Melting occurs at 0° Celsius.

Called Freezing Point if Decreasing Heat Called Melting Point if Increasing Heat

Remember… *Freezing goes from a liquid to a solid *Melting goes from a solid to a liquid
