BIOS: Basic Input/Output System BIOS software is built into the PC (boot firmware) Stored on a non-volatile ROM chip on the motherboard First code that is run by a PC when powered on When the PC starts up, BIOS initialize and identify system devices (POST-Power On Self Test) video display card, keyboard and mouse, HDD, optical disc drive and other hardware. BIOS then locates boot loader software held on a peripheral device (designated as a 'boot device'), Eg: hard disk or a CD/DVD, Loads and executes that software, giving it control of the PC.
