2  A chemical property of matter is difficult to explain, but easy to see.  Chemical property= a substances ability to produce a reaction and change into a new substance.  The most common are: general reactivity, flammability, and combustibility.

3  Physical property= a property that can be observed or measured without changing the substance.  Some simple examples are: color, odor, shape, etc.  Some other physical properties include: conductivity(heat & electricity), state of matter, malleability(can be pounded into sheets), ductility(can form into wire), solubility(dissolves), and density.

4  Density=The amount of mass an object has per unit of volume. D=m/v.  Density is recorded in units of g/mL.  Water has a density ~1g/mL. Anything that has a density less than 1g/mL will float. Anything with a density greater than 1g/mL will sink.  Mass=The amount of matter in a substance.  Volume=The amount of 3D space an object takes up.

5  There are two ways to get the volume of an object: calculate it or measure it.  The only shapes we will calculate the volume of are normal shaped boxes and cylinders.  Volume of a normal box= l x w x h  Volume of a cylinder= Πr 2 h  Watch the demonstration of how to measure volume and take notes.
