Definitions Fully Accredited A combined pass rate of at least 75 percent on English tests in grades 3 - 5 is required for full accreditation at the elementary school level, and for other schools with students in these grades. Elementary schools also must achieve a pass rate of at least 70 percent in mathematics and in grade 5 science and grade 5 history, and pass rates of at least 50 percent in grade 3 science and grade 3 history Adequate Yearly Progress - determines how every public school and school district in the country is performing academically http://www.doe.virginia.gov/statistics_reports/accreditation_ayp_reports/accreditation/index. shtml#ratings
5
Adequate Yearly Progress Successful progress 1) at least 95 % of all students are tested for reading and math 2) at least 95 % of all students meet the minimum annual target for meeting expectations 3) at least 95 % of all students meet the minimum annual target for attendance Unsuccessful progress 1) schools that do not meet AYP for two consecutive years are placed in "School Improvement Status" and must offer alternative school attendance opportunities to students within their schools 2) schools do not make AYP for three consecutive years, they must offer both alternative school attendance opportunities and opportunities for students to increase their learning outside of school time 3) schools miss AYP for a fourth consecutive year, they are designated as being in "Corrective Action" and must choose among strategies outlined by NCLB 4) year of missing AYP results in a restructuring planning year when the school is shut down, and then a sixth year of missing AYP requires that the restructuring plan be implemented

Definitions Standard of Learning (SOL) Tests The Standards of Learning (SOL) describe the commonwealth's expectations for student learning and achievement in grades K-12 in English, mathematics, science, history/social science, technology, the fine arts, foreign language, health and physical education, and driver education. SOL assessments measure student achievement in English, mathematics, science and history/social science. Students are assessed in English and mathematics in grades 3-8 and at the conclusion of certain high school-level courses. SOL tests in science and history are administered in grades 3, 5 and 8 and at the end of high school-level courses in these subjects. Some students may take tests at other grade levels based on the school’s curriculum. http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/index.shtml

VA and Standardized Testing “The national test uses a common set of metrics for students in all states and sets a high bar for student achievement. States' expectations and standardized tests vary greatly. Compared to the national test, Virginia sets a dramatically lower bar for student achievement.” Low High http://nbcscorecard.greatschools.org/schools/VA/1454.html
