RIGHTS OF A UNITED STATES CITIZEN Right to vote in elections for public officials. - VOTE Freedom to express yourself. Freedom to worship as you wish. Right to a prompt, fair trial by jury. Right to apply for federal employment requiring U.S. citizenship. Right to run for elected office. Other rights as outlined in the United States Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Amendments **AS PER THE UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION SERVICES

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A UNITED STATES CITIZEN VOTE Support and defend the Constitution. Stay informed of the issues affecting your community. Participate in the democratic process. Respect and obey federal, state, and local laws. Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others. Participate in your local community. Freedom to pursue “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Pay income and other taxes honestly, and on time, to federal, state, and local authorities. Serve on a jury when called upon. Defend the country if the need should arise. **AS PER THE UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION SERVICES

ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT THESE… PERSONAL RIGHTS – apply to you directly, protections from the Government POLITICAL RIGHTS – rights you can exercise in daily life ECONOMIC RIGHTS – rights to have regarding jobs, finances, etc.

These rights are the basis of citizenship in the US These rights apply to all citizens and to most “ people ” These are the basics of protection for each one of us as we live our lives In ways, they are still defined by the courts They are split into three categories Personal Political Economic

Make money legally to no limit Much of this ties into the idea of Capitalism (we will discuss later)
