EDN205 Assignment 2 ICT Trends and Issues Teaching Speciality: Secondary School Science Presented by Dhivahar Sri Ranjan
2
Presentation Outline Research on 3 resources: Journal Article, a website and a teacher tube clip Journal Article: Making connections in Science: Engaging with ICT to enhance Curriculum Understanding Website: Phet Simulation Colorado Physics http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/physics Video: Teacher tube http://www.teachertube.com/video/constant-velocity-and-acceleration-using- toys-125916
3
Presentation outline (cont) For each resource: 1. Research findings 2. Advantages 3. Disadvantages 4. Recommendations Conclusion
4
Research Journal: Making connections in Science: Engaging with ICT to enhance Curriculum Understanding Technological Pedagogical Content contains Content, Pedagogy and technology Expert teachers are recognized for Deep Knowledge of topic + ICT Capabilities Aimed at designing ‘Chemistry Animation” using AITSL Standard 2.1 and 2.6
5
Advantages Promoted high Student Engagement towards using technological softwares to design chemistry Animations Could be extended to understanding physics topics and concepts Promoted student motivation as they had the freedom to chose from a range of IT related programs Scope for further learning was present as collaboration with university was evident
6
Disadvantages Students showed evidence of poor understanding of science related concepts 6 week period considered long to identify students who showed poor understanding of a concept As university collaboration is involved, low literacy students may not be able to follow the suggested methods
7
Website: Phet Simulation Colorado Physics Uses visual animations to help students understand physics concepts by following simple instructions in an engaging way
8
Examples of Physics Concepts Static Electricity Circuit Resistors Balloons and Buoyancy
9
Advantages Student engagement is high because of enhanced visual simulations Covers a range of physics concepts that a student can use to help understand the practical aspect of a topic Can help reduce teacher dominated lessons Can be used during a double science period after explaining what a physics concept is
10
Disadvantages Students may simply use the simulations as fun activities without understanding physics dynamic contents and concepts The simulations may not work for students who have high science literacy skills Once students have played the simulations without understanding the concept, they simply lose interest
11
Video: Teacher tube Website that teachers can use to access videos on a respective subject discipline: Used physics for my resource
12
Examples of Physics videos on Teacher Tube SpeedSound VelocityMagnetism Acceleration Electricity Distance Energy Changes Specific Heat CapacityLight Heat TransferTemperature RadioactivityOhm’s Law
13
Advantages Covers a whole range of physics topics and can be used for students of any secondary year Has a wide range of learning aids such as using experiments, teaching and presentations Learning aids are diverse to take into account student learning ability (VAK) learning model
14
Disadvantages Students may find the visual explanations boring May not work well with students with low literacy skills as there is a fair amount of teacher dominated sessions Videos present are not entirely Australian curriculum based
15
Recommendations It is important to chose an education technology tool that caters for class competency, such as average performance or High Literacy Skills It is the Science teacher’s role to merge engaging science simulations or videos to the theoretical dynamics to create meaningful learning
16
Conclusion (ICT Trends and Issues) New education technology tools are emerging, but it is the teachers role to pick one that provides a perfect strategic fit for a group of students Incorporation of ICT in the class helps to change the role of the teacher to a facilitator and give students control over their work It is the teachers fundamental job to explain the dynamics of a physics concept to make a topic meaningful, engaging and relevant to life
