Guidelines and Requirements for Temporary & Professional Coaching Certifications.

To Start Coaching CERTIFIED TEACHER Un-certified COACH *First Aid AED CPR/AED NON-Teacher Un-certified COACH * First Aid CPR/AED ** Fingerprinting & background check on file. Obtain a temporary coaching license from BOCES. (reissued each year) * It is the district’s responsibility to make sure that these courses: (1 st Aid/CPR) have been completed. * Must be approved course (initial 12 hour training/ 5 ½ hour update every three years) such as Responding to Emergencies, EMT, First Responder (Standard First Aid is not an Approved course)

Additional Requirements After Initial Appointment – non-teacher Un-certified coach NOT Once the person is employed by the district, it is the district’s responsibility to make sure that the fingerprinting process is completed and the coach has applied for a Temporary license. After fingerprints are received, they must be reviewed and any necessary action will take place. ( BOCES is NOT responsible for CHECKING these items,Only the processing of the Temporary Application.) **Coaches do not have to provide a fingerprint check to file initially for Temporary Certificate.**

Complete approved Violence prevention & Intervention Workshop within one year of initial appointment. Certified Teacher Un-certified Coach Be enrolled in or have completed: Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education within two years of initial appointment. Certified Teacher Un-certified Coach Complete: Health Sciences Applied to Coaching and the Theory and Techniques of Coaching ** within three years of initial appointment (unless an extension has been approved by the SED). Complete: Health Sciences Applied to Coaching and the Theory and Techniques of Coaching ** within three years of initial appointment (unless an extension has been approved by the SED). Annual renewal of temporary coaching license. After third year, obtain a Professional Coaching Certificate. ** Theory and Techniques of Coaching is Sport Specific. Non-teacher Un-certified coach

**Eligibility For a Professional Coaching Certification** not NYS Certified teachers are not required to apply for a Professional Coaching Certificate. Completed the three mandated courses. Completed the First Aid & CPR requirement (First Aid must be renewed every 3 years/CPR renewed annually). Completed a minimum of three years coaching experience in a specific sport in a NYS interscholastic athletic program. Submit an evaluation by either the principal or athletic director for in the specific sport for each renewal. Certified Teacher Un-certified coach Non-teacher

The Professional Certificate: The Professional Certificate is sport specific and is valid for three years. Renewal for an additional three-year period must be obtained to continue coaching.(per CR 135.4(7)
