Introduction TThe term child labor is used for employment of children below a certain age, which is considered illegal by law and custom. TThe stipulated age varies from country to country and government to government. Child labor is a world phenomenon which is considered exploitative and inhuman by many international organizations.

Background of child labour  Exploitation of working children in developing countries has been reported since the 1800s.  However, political awareness of the effects of working on children’s physical and psychological well being has gained substantial momentum in the international community only since the start of the 1990s.  The International Labour Organization’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), founded in1992, aims to eliminate child labour. It operates in 88 countries and is the largest program of its kind in the world.  IPEC works with international and government agencies, NGOs, the media, and children and their families to end child labour and provide children with education and assistance.

Tear brimmed eyes scan the garbage In search of cans and food The eyes that never saw The sight of playgrounds or school The dry chapped hands that only felt The touch of hammers and rags The hands that only know How to clean and scrub And not to write and draw The dusty feet that have never felt The touch of a warm shoe Or felt beneath them A carpeted floor The feet that only know The prick of thorns and rocks A child, child like us Who should have gone to school Who should have read the books we did And eaten ice cream on a hot summer's day Instead of picking through the trash Or weaving carpets with fingers that Were meant to hold pencils and pens A child, with childhood stolen away

Child labor statistics OOOOne in every six children aged 5 to 17 worldwide is exploited by child labor. TTTThere are approximately 9 million children involved in the unconditional worst forms of child labor. IIIIn Sub-Saharan Africa around one in three children are engaged in child labor, representing 69 million children. IIIIn South Asia, another 44 million are engaged in child labor.

Child labor in India  INDIA accounts for the second highest number where child labor in the world.  Africa accounts for the highest number of children employed and exploited.  According to certain experts approximately 10 million bonded children laborers are working as domestic servants in India.  Beyond this there are almost 55 million bonded child laborers hired across various other industries.

Regulation and prohibition act  This was declared by the parliament on 23rd December, 1986.  It includes Prohibition of employment of children in certain occupations and processes.  No child shall be employed or permitted to work in any of the occupations which are hazardous by its nature.

Whether the international regulation for prohibition of child labour is successful or not IIn India: GGovernment implemented a successful programme, the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) since 1988 where in 7,328 special schools were opened for the children withdrawn from work. TThe National Child Labour Project scheme is implemented in 250 districts of 20 states of the country. Under the Scheme, children withdrawn from work are provided education, nutrition, vocational training, stipend and health care etc. and are finally mainstreamed to regular education system IIn Morocco Unicef and its partners are working to reduce the number of children working in the handicraft sector in Fez. IIn Senegal, a debt- cancellation agreement between the Italian and Senegalese governments signed strategies, in particular towards the elimination of child labour.

* Child is mean to learn, not to earn. * Put the child in classes not in tea glasses. * Do a favour, avoid child labour. * Children filling their pocket instead of filling their mind. * Give your child pencil, but not to wash utensil.

Conclusion  The social malady of child labor can be brought under control, if each individual takes responsibility of reporting about anyone employing a child below the age of 14years.  Thus, instead of ignoring on should find out about reporting child labor and how such children can actually be saved.  Child labor can be controlled if the government functions effectively with the support of the public.
