The Order of Operations Also known as the hierarchy of math operations
2
In a math statement l What operations are done 1st, 2nd, and so on? l For example: in the statement 2+5x7-2^4x(6-4)/(7+1)-3x2^3 what is the correct order in which to do the operations, so that you would get the correct answer?
3
1st do parentheses l Moving across from left to right l 2+5x7-2x(6-4)/(7+1)-3x2^3 l becomes: l 2+5x7-2^4x(2)/(8)-3x2^3
4
2nd do the exponents l Moving across from left to right l 2+5x7-2^4x(2)/(8)-3x2^3 l becomes: l 2+5x7-16x(2)/(8)-3x8
5
3rd Mult. & Div. l Moving across from left to right l 2+5x7-16x(2)/(8)-3x8 l becomes: l 2+35-32/(8)-24 l And: l 2+35-4-24
6
4th Add. & Sub. l Moving across from left to right l 2+35-4-24 l becomes: l 9 l Focus on the order in which operations are done. This applies within parentheses too.
