History 1967- James C Davidson Conceived Journal as an outlet for the working physician Initially published by a private printing company Transferred to the Zambia Medical Association in 1971

Scope The Medical Journal of Zambia is a peer-reviewed quarterly journal intended for the publication of papers from all specialties of medicine and their subspecialties, basic science, public health, social science and medical politics

Staff Structure Editor Associate Editors- 6, specialty-specific initially Editorial Board- 8 members (2 international) Editorial Assistant- Full-time employee Production Consultant

Manuscript Submission Manuscripts submitted to Editorial Office Authors submit: Hard copies directly, electronically via e-mail and direct transfer from mass storage devices to Journal computers

Review Process Initial evaluation for suitability and adherence to Journal layout requirements Two or three reviewers identified Manuscript blinded and sent to reviewers Reviewers are blinded

Production Process Peer review Acceptance Assembly of issue Layout Printing

Dissemination Postal delivery to all Association members Postal delivery to all subscribing organizations

Strategic Plan Business Plan has addressed: 1.Personnel needs 2.ICT requirements 3.Production of the journal

INTERACTIONS WITH MEDICAL LIBRARIANS Two training workshops on accessing internet scholarly resources Training done for Foundation 50 Academic Society members, potential authors, researchers and reviewers Arranged for the Journal to participate in the INASP Workshop on Publishing Quality and Online Strategy

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES In collaboration with F-50 Society the following workshops were held for authors: 1.Academic Writing 2.Internet Resources 3.Research Proposal Development 4.Introduction to Study Design and Biostatistics

INTERNATIONAL PARTNER New England Journal of Medicine Initial contact- Visit to Editorial Offices Identified initial areas of concern and possible ways of addressing them Preliminary plan for NEJM visit in 2010 for author and reviewer workshops

AJPP/ NEJM This participation offers an opportunity to address: 1.Galvanized the ZMA to address the personnel shortcomings 2.Provide a solution to ICT requirements 3.Help improve production of the journal
