Welcome to DMSP Think. Learn. GROW.

What are some things you’d like to learn about today? Part 1: The Effective Teacher Graphic 1-3 Quick Write
3
On-Site Teacher Introduction o Welcome all students to your room. o Check to make sure they are in the correct place. o I either do my attendance to check or have them all take out their schedules to verify location. o Short introduction about myself. o Name, hometown, years teaching, places taught, favorites, and description of family (pictures if you can).
4
Workshop Participant Introductions rel Part 2: The First Days of School Graphic 2-1You o Individual introductions. o I want to know game. (only done with semi- small groups unless you have the time for larger groups) o Shoes pair up introduction. o Hand out for individual surveys. (all of them for options)

Expectations Expectations power point. Will not do this the first day. Students should be able to pick out majority of your expectations after the first day of class. When power point is shown, have students take simple notes about expectations. At the end, they will be asked to group up and illustrate a description of one of the expectations already described.
6
Procedures I spread the teaching of procedures out throughout the first week of school. Recap Some procedures I do teach the very first day are; How to enter the room. How to get your belongings for class. How to exit the room. I reteach procedures for the first month of school and reteach throughout the year. Need to stay consistent with how you want your procedures to be done. Steps of teaching procedures – gradual release

Discipline Plan o o Rules are established and discussed during the expectations. o o Consequences are also talked about during the expectations power point and during the reminder walk through of the 7 levels. o o Harding already has a discipline policy mapped out. This discipline policy is also common knowledge for all students. o o Remember to read up and really understand the discipline policy in your school because that will help tremendously throughout your first year.

Room Arrangement Need to consider how many students are on your roster and be able to accommodate that number with the amount of space you have in your room. Things to consider; Walking through rows if you have desks. Ability of seeing the overhead screen for students. Things or objects to get distracted by for students. Trash can location. Student supply location. Make sure to become good friends with your office manager and your custodian!
9
Additions Whole class incentives. (really good to have!) Turn in, hand back system. (seems simple enough, but it needs some thought in order to be most effective.) Know your building the best you can so you can describe how to get places in the school. Your students will be more intimidated by not knowing their way around then you will. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.
