2
The sun did not shine It was too wet to play So they sat in the house All that cold, cold, wet day.
3
They sat there together They sat there, the two The boy said he wished they had something to do. Too wet to go out And too cold to play ball So they sat in the house Doing nothing at all
4
They couldn’t do anything. But just sit there and sit. They, of course, didn’t like it. Not one little bit.
5
Then something went bump! How that bump made us jump!
6
They looked! Then they saw him step in on the mat! They looked! And they saw him! The Cat in the Hat! And he said to them, Why do you sit there like that?
7
He said he had games He said it with a shout He said he knew games we could play in the house The two children, wide-eyed Did not know what to say, Their mother was out of the house For the day
8
But I, the Fish said, NO! Make that cat go away! Tell that Cat in the Hat You do NOT want to play He should not be here He should not be about He should not be here When your mother is out
9
But the cat went on To play was his wish, So he played a game Called Up-up-up with the Fish
10
He held me up high I was over his head I screamed and panicked I did not want to be dead He said “Do not worry, I won’t let you fall I can even balance you While on top of a ball” With a book in his hand And a cup on his hat “I will not let you fall” Said the mischievous cat
11
Then he held up the cup And the milk and the cake He tossed up the book And held me up on a rake He balanced the toy ship And the little toy man And with his cat tail He held up a fan
12
And then as the cat Bounced around on the ball He lost his balance And then I DID fall And as I looked around To see what he dropped I soon figured out That he dropped quite a lot
13
I yelled at him loud I told him to go But he said “We can play Another game that I know” He sprinted outside As quick as a fox And he ran back inside with a big, wide red box
14
He opened the box And before I could blink Two things darted out I didn’t know what to think “Don’t worry,” said the cat They will not hurt you, They’re my two little things, Named thing one and thing two” They’re hair is blue And they love to have fun Do you want to play With thing two and thing one?
15
The kids shook their hands, but I said no! no! Those things should not be In this house! Make them go! They brought out two kites And they flew them inside But then I said NO Those kites should not glide The hit the lamps They scratched up the wall They hit the pictures As they ran down the hall
16
I looked out the window I trembled in fear I yelled to the kids “Your mother is here!” The boy ran down the hall And he got his big net He captured the things But they weren’t done yet The Cat packed up the things And he left in distress He was sad that he left Our whole house in a mess
17
There is no way to pick up this mess I said. Your mom will come home And then we’ll be dead! And then the door opened And I never would’ve guessed That the Cat would be back To clean up his big mess He rode through the house On a big red machine And with so many gears It started to clean
18
He rode out the door And said “That is that.” And then he was gone With a tip of his hat
