A math journal is one of the best ways to introduce writing into your math class. It helps students stretch their thinking and make sense of problems. When children write in their math journals, they examine, express and keep track of their reasoning.
4
Help students become aware of what they do and do not know. o Connect prior knowledge with what the student is studying. o Give the student a chance to reflect on what is known. o Allow the student to construct mathematics for him or herself. Help teachers answer specific questions. o Can the student explain concepts? o Does the student use communication skills effectively? o Does the student use appropriate mathematical language?
5
Writing about your thinking is challenging. It is best to start with familiar open-ended prompts such as: I see... I think... This reminds me of...
10
Right now I feel… Write a question that looms large in your mind right now. One thing I would like to accomplish today is…
13
1. What does choice offer for students? 2. How does the thinking sheet help students? Teachers? 3. Do you think that it is important to have rubric on the thinking sheet? Why or why not? 4. How can a picture bring on so much discussion? 5. What formal math language was used? Math notation? 6. What could you do in your lesson if this was just an opening ?

Chicken Goat

What was going through your mind when you solved the problem? (to reveal the reasoning process) What was interesting? (to see their curiosity) What helped you find the solution? (to articulate strategic thinking, to find patterns, to acknowledge the thinking of others) What are you wondering? ( to inspire further investigations, to perceive inquiry as an ongoing process)

There are many ways to organize math journals and math writing. You must decide what would be best for you and the students in your class.
20
You have been asked by a friend to make a representation to highlight your Day One of Math Summer Institute.
22
The basic steps to think pair share -question “ How has…” ------------------------- -think -pair -share
23
Once students are comfortable with the Think-Pair-Share strategy, introduce Think- Write-Pair-Share strategy. As the students think about the question they also write their response in a variety of techniques such as webbing, pictures, numbers, and words.
25
On your table you will find a sheet with 6 pictures. One person will choose a picture from the container. Using the sentence starters, talk about your pictures using proper math language. Your partners will use this information to guess which picture you are describing. Take turns until all photos are used.
