Images & Imagery and the basics of using Paint Shop Pro 9.0 to manipulate them. and the basics of using Paint Shop Pro 9.0 to manipulate them.

What we’ll cover What do I mean by “Image & Imagery” Image Formats Image Properties Color Depth Image Manipulation using Paint Shop Pro 9.0 Using Images in ArcGIS

What do I mean by “Image & Imagery Digital Images or graphics Raster Not Vector Examples: –DOQ, DRG, Satellite, or any Digital Image no matter what source.

Image Formats Most Popular: –BMP, JPG, GIF, and TIF Others you might see: –BIP, BIL, BSQ, IMG, PSD, PSP, WMF, GeoTIFF Some associated files: –.TFW,.HDR,.RRD

Raster Properties A raster format breaks an image into a grid of equally-sized pieces, called pixels, and records color information for each pixel.

Raster Properties – What’s a Pixel?

Raster Properties Physical Size –Height/Width or Rows/Columns –Pixels, Centimeters, or Inches Resolution –Dots (pixels) Per Inch (DPI) –Meters per Pixel –Cell Size Compression –TIF Packbits or LZW, JPG, MrSid, RLE Color Depth (i.e. 1-bit, 4-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit)

Color Depth The number of colors the file contains is determined by the bits- per-pixel: the more information recorded for each pixel, the more shades and hues the file can contain, and the larger the filesize. Most raster formats support multiple bits-per-pixel levels, and therefore more than one level of color.

Color Depth Number of Bits / Number of Colors 12 (True Bitmap) 416 8256 1632,768 or 65,536 2416,777,216
