Dictionary A dictionary is a reference book that contains words listed in alphabetical order that gives information about the words meanings, forms, pronunciation, etc.

Thesaurus a book in which words that have the same or similar meanings are grouped together

Glossary a list that gives definitions of the hard or unusual words found in a book

Syllabication (Syllables)
any one of the parts into which a word is naturally divided when it is pronounced

a word that has the same meaning as another word in the same language
Synonym a word that has the same meaning as another word in the same language

Antonym a word with a meaning that is opposite to the meaning of another word.

Multiple Meaning Words
Words that have more than one meaning

Guide Words either one of the words that are at the top of a page in a dictionary or similar book and that show the first and last words on the page

Denotation The meaning of a word or phrase

Connotation something suggested by a word or thing

Entry Words a word entered in a list or book; especially : a word in boldface type that is being explained in a dictionary

Accent Marks used to indicate stress or placed above a vowel to indicate a special pronunciation

Etymology an explanation of where a word came from : the history of a word

Affix Prefix - a letter or group of letters that is added at the beginning of a word to change its meaning Suffix - a letter or a group of letters that is added to the end of a word to change its meaning or to form a different word a letter or group of letters added to the beginning or end of a word to change its meaning : a prefix or suffix

Root Words the basic part of a word which shows its main meaning, to which other parts can be added.

Superscript a symbol (such as a number or letter) written above and immediately to the left or right of another character

Context Clues The words that are used with a certain word or phrase and that help to explain its meaning

Analogy a comparison of two things based on their being alike in some way

Convections a traditional or common style often used in literature, theater, or art to create a particular effect
