What do you observe in the pictures? What can you infer from the picture?
4
How does an earthquake occur? It occurs when there is a sudden breaking of large rocks below or at the surface of the earth.
6
What are the two types of earthquakes? 1. Tectonic earthquake 2. Volcanic earthquake
7
Tectonic Earthquake
8
Volcanic Earthquake
9
P waves - P or Primary waves are the fastest of the seismic waves. - They travel at incredible speeds, 14,000 mph to 25,000 mph through the core of the Earth. - They are even able to pass all the way through the entire Earth.
11
S Waves - S or surface waves. They travel at about half the speed of P waves. - They move objects in their paths in an up and down motion, in the direction that the wave is moving.
13
L Waves - L or Love waves move the ground from side to side in a horizontal plane but at right angles. - The horizontal shaking of Love waves is particularly damaging to the foundations of structures.
16
How will you relate earthquakes & volcanoes? 1. When a volcano erupts, it can cause 2. They are both caused by crustal plates movement. earthquake.
18
How are volcanoes formed? When a continental plate and an oceanic plate move apart and the space is filled up with molten magma.
20
What agency in the Philippines studies about earthquakes & volcanoes? PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology & Seismology)
21
Did you know that our country also experienced one of the most terrible earthquakes? It was July 16, 1990, at exactly 4:26 pm, with a 7.8 magnitude. It killed 1,621 people.
24
Partner Activity - Choose a partner. - List down 3 reasons why volcano is a friend to us and 3 reasons why it is a foe to us. (cuartilla)
25
How does an earthquake occur? How are volcanoes formed?
26
Group Activity - Compare and contrast earthquake & volcanic eruption. - Give 2 differences for earthquake & volcanic eruption and their 2 similarities. (for 6 points)
27
Group # Gr. 6 - C Mar. 4, ‘11 earthquakeVolcanic eruption It releases lava.
28
