Unit 5 Transformations Today’s topic: translations Standard COS 6: Use geometric descriptions of rigid motions to transform figures. Jobs used in: Computer and information systems, engineering (all types), constructions, funeral directors
3
Vocabulary Transformation: a change in the position, shape, or size of a geometric figure. Preimage: the original figure in a transformation. Image: the figure after the transformation Rigid motion: a transformation that preserves distance and angle measure.
4
Example 1: Identifying Rigid Motion Does the transformation appear to be a rigid motion. Explain Preimageimage
5
Examples, you try Does the transformation appear to be a rigid motion? Explain
6
Example 2: Naming images and corresponding parts In the diagram EFGH E’F’G’H’ What are the images of Angle f and angle h? What are the pairs of corresponding sides?
7
Example, you try In the diagram NID SUP What are the images of Angle I and point D? What are the corresponding sides?
8
Translation A translation is a transformation that maps all points of a figure the same distance in the same direction. Example:
9
Finding the image of a translation What are the vertices of T ( PQR)? Graph the image of PQR
10
Example, you try What are the vertices of T ( ABC)? Graph the image of ABC
11
Writing the rule to describe a translation
12
LMN’s translation is L’M’N’ with L’ (1, -2) M’(3, -4) N’(6, -2) What is a rule that describes the translation?
