Hello, my name is Naida. I’ve made up my mind about my future career. I’m going to become a hotel manager. Being both young and ambitious, I want to achieve good results and become famous in this field. First of all I’d like to get some information about the history of hotel industry.

The history of hotel industry – It’s closely connected with the history of human society. The guest houses (taverns, public houses or later-inns) became the first hotels. Giving service to travelers as a kind of work duties appeared more than 2000 years B.C. in Orient Civilization. A century after Romans built special houses for official travelers. These buildings, located along the main roads, gave shelter to horses and their owners. Elswort Milton Statler was the first hotel owner and manager.

Modern Hotels Since then a hotel industry has grown up. Nowadays modern hotels look luxurious and comfortable. Tourists all over the world prefer staying there. Hotels can be either expensive or cheap. It depends. A hotel manager is by all means a central figure in the hotel industry. He (or she) must do all administrative work.

The main idea of my project was to research which skills, qualities and abilities are necessary in my job. Skills as a dictionary says are the abilities to do something well, usually as a result of experience and training; qualities are features of a person’s character; abilities are the qualities of being able to do a particular job. The question is how to become a skilled worker in a hotel industry. I interviewed seven hotel managers, working in the most famous and prestigious Moscow hotels Arbat, Tourist, Volga, Avita, Airostat, Metropol and Molodezhnaya.

The first question was: “What skills, qualities and abilities do you need in your job?” The most popular replies were

Then I studied the role of English in the world English is an international language. It’s spoken as a native language by more than 300 million people. In about 25 countries English has been used as an official language. It’s used for communication, listening, reading, broadcast, in commerce and travel. Half of the world’s scientific literature is in English. It’s the language of automation and computer technology.

The second question was: “How often do you use English in your job?”

And the third question was: “What do you use English for?” The interviewees replied To meet foreign tourists To make and take calls To get reservations To serve clients To write e-mails To work with a computer For communication For checking in and out

Finally, reporting my survey Finally, reporting my survey I’d like to say that all skills, qualities and abilities I was told during the interviews are necessary for my future career. Besides, one can’t become a highly qualified specialist without the knowledge of English. You may use it every day or from time to time in your daily routine, but during a job interview, an employer will definitely test your level of English. If you want to earn good money and make a career you must learn English. Another aspect of my future career is a good vocational training. When I leave college, I’ll be the first graduate who has chosen this profession. It’s a great responsibility because we represent both our college and particularly teachers who gave us knowledge and professional training. I hope I will deserve it.
