“Teaching our Children” Deut 6

Teaching our Children Deut 6 6 "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 "You shall teach them diligently to your children 12 "then beware, lest you forget the LORD

Teaching our Children Parents have responsibility Eph 6:4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. 2 Tim 3:14 …knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures

Teaching our Children Elders have responsibility Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Teaching our Children The Bible class program for our children 2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Teaching our Children Josh 1:8 "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Teaching our Children Organized approach From the beginning Law of Moses Wisdom literature fits into the time of the United Kingdom Prophets fit in the periods that follow: Divided Kingdom, Judah Alone, Captivity, and Return from Captivity

Teaching our Children Organized approach Life, death, and resurrection of Christ Establishment of His church Epistles fit in the time of Acts and the years that follow

Teaching our Children Study entire Bible narrative Many ‘mature’ Christian do not understand connectivity of Bible narrative God’s complete plan for redeeming man to Himself Study of God’s mighty works among people in the past How God dealt with people in the past; rewards and punishments

Teaching our Children Lessons we can learn about serving God from this study Not just a matter of studying the narrative The narrative becomes a skeleton, a framework Make applications to our daily living Study lessons appropriately learned from the text

Teaching our Children Large part of the work of our teachers— making the lesson real to students’ daily living Perhaps we have not emphasized this enough to our teachers; plan for more teacher meetings We strongly believe this approach is valuable to our children

Teaching our Children Modifications being considered Current plan is not written in stone Setup by elders to serve needs of this congregation Can be modified if/when needed Suggestion that high school class spend time studying epistles

Teaching our Children Considering (high school class) spending last six months of 3-yr cycle studying from epistles rather than the early church and journeys of Paul This will take some time to properly plan and get lessons ready Will be ready by time we get to that point in the cycle

Teaching our Children Sunday night classes Have been announced publically, but elders not directly involved Request by some parents to have children more knowledgeable about teaching of various religious groups and how to refute that teaching Eldership wants to be responsive; to consider requests and suggestions

Teaching our Children Plan to use 2nd and 4th Sunday night high school classes to address this request Jeff is currently coordinating this class – topics, teachers, hosts, etc. Elders and Jeff have discussed this— he is totally supportive

Teaching our Children The approach Study some Bible subject—learn the truth on a matter Then discuss teaching of various religious groups that would differ from this truth What religious teachings must be rejected when compared to the truth just studied There are numerous topics that could be studied and application made in this manner

Teaching our Children Other classes Summer weekend studies for high school and college ages Jeff’s recent classes in Hebrews Other classes in homes of members Lessons from the pulpit

Teaching our Children Parents teaching children at home Certainly cannot be overlooked Deut 6, Eph 6, 2 Tim 3 used earlier Can be used to Cover topics not emphasized in other classes To reinforce studies from regular classes—lesson preparation, etc Cover topics where your children have additional questions

Teaching our Children Summary Our children have multiple opportunities to learn about God and His Son and how to please them Those of us who teach in public classes bear an awesome responsibility

Teaching our Children Parents share in this responsibility by Having your children present for class Having your children prepared for class Physically Mentally Spiritually (lesson studied, verses memorized, etc) Teaching your children at home In your everyday living

Teaching our Children Children have responsibility as well Listen; participate; learn; apply; do 2 Tim 3:14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,

Teaching our Children We want every child attending at Eastside to know God, to know who He is, to know His Son and what He has done for us, to know how to serve Him and strive for that heavenly home Christ has prepared for those who love Him.

The Truth Joh 8:32 "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Taken Captive 2Tim 2:25 … so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

Our Defense Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Our Defense Eph 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day… 14 girded your waist with truth 16 taking the shield of faith Ro 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 17 which is the word of God;

Our Defense Eph 6:16 taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

Our Reward John 14:3 that where I am, there you may be also
