By: Mark

Alessandro Malaspina attempted to create a canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He failed, and to make things worse, he lost about 22,000 men from dieses and other dangers.

The later building of the Panama Canal started in 1904. This was a extremely hard and dangerous job.

The canal has two sets of locks. The locks raise or lower allowing boats to pass through the isthmus.

These locks are huge and are extremely strong to keep the water back.

The U.S spent over $40,000,000 on equipment and excavations. The total cost when it was finished was over $400,000,000.

The canal doesn't only consist of locks it also consist of a river and a lake. Extremely large ships can pass through the canal. There are very few ships that can’t. This is the U.S.S New Jersey.

The U.S.A chose Panama because of it’s very narrow isthmus..

The Panama canal was completed in 1914. The death toll was lower than early efforts, about 5,609 workers.

There is a 10 mile stretch of land that is known as the Canal Zone. This land was owned by the U.S from 1903-1979 Presently, it is in control by the Panamanian government.

The Canal Zone has every thing needed to live like hospitals and even a collage.

The Panama Canal will always be one of man’s most amazing structures.
