History ● Originally named Qingyi Yuan, which is also known as the Garden of Clear Ripples ● First constructed in 1750 ● After destroyed in 1860 by French allied forces, it was rebuilt and renamed the Yihe Yuan also known as The Garden of Health and Harmony ● It was supposed to serve as a summer resort for the Empress Dowager Cixi (now Summer Palace) ● 1900 Summer Palace was once again destroyed by allied forces of the Eight Powers (Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, and the United States) ● Damage repaired in 1902

General Info ● Located in Beijing, China ● Vast group of lakes, gardens, and palaces ● Covers expanse of 2.9 sq. km (¾ water) ● Dominated by Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake ● Kunming Lake was man-made ● Soil excavated used to build Longevity Hill ● UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) included Summer Palace on World Heritage List
