Fails - due to disease, crop failures, and Indians becoming hostile. Father Hidalgo – asks French Catholic priests to come and hold services for converted Indians St. Denis sent to East Texas and was arrested and later released Presidios were built to protect the Missions.

Spain reopens six Missions in East and South Texas to regain control of Texas
Mission San Antonio de Valero (Alamo) and Presidio San Antonio de Bexar (San Antonio) were built at the halfway point between Mexico City and East Texas for supplies and military aide to East Texas Missions begin to fall apart again – Indians could not adapt, would not work, did not want to take orders, and wanted to be free.
