2. What is IBD? (IBD) inflammatory bowel disease (not irritable bowel syndrome ) Ulcerative Colitis Crohn’s Disease. Idiopathic disease Bowel: any part of the alimentary canal that is lower than the stomach. Remission is the disappearance of the symptoms and pains, temporary /permanent.

4. What is Crohn’s Disease? Any part of alimentary canal (bowel parts) Common: Last part of the small intestine (terminal ileum) and parts of the large intestine. Children with Crohn’s disease may not grow properly during puberty. Poor muscle and frail

6. What is Ulcerative Colitis? Limited to the colon (large intestine)

7. How is it Diagnosed? Inflammation of the intestinal tract Sores on the intestinal tract Abdominal pain Fatigue Diarrhea Blood or mucus in feces Symptoms can come or go Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis have different symptoms Experts think that IBD is connected with the immune system

8. What are the Mechanisms of IBD? Affects the digestive track: swollen intestines cease to function efficiently, results in bad digestion. Malabsorption of nutrients: swelling of the intestine would reduce surface area of the microfibers, thus reducing nutrients absorbed.

9. How can it be Treated? No cure known for IBD yet Symptoms can be relieved by drugs and surgery Ulcerative colitis can be removed surgically Not a “death sentence” but is with you for life There is a foundation that is looking for a cure, the CCFA
