Life Span – November 15 th, 1776 – May 3 rd, 1839 Education – graduating from Växjö gymnasium in 1792, Studied theology at Lund University, and finished his degree at Uppsala University in 1797 Historical Time Period - Gustavian era (1772–1809)

Known to be the “Father of Massage” Used experiences of his own pain to help create his technique and style of massage Some consider him to be the founder of medical gymnastics

Influenced the “Swedish Massage” system His medical gymnastics influenced later institutions and systems Principal at the Royal Gymnastic Central Institute

Massages were more active and less relaxing during his time He was the son of a minister He liked fencing, and got the title “fencing master” at the Uppsala University in 1805
