1
Electrical components and circuits
2
Starter Benjamin Franklin Thomas Edison Have you heard of these people? Why are they significant?
3
Benjamin Franklin – Proved that lightning was electricity by flying a kite in a lightning storm – Helped people understand the principles of electricity Thomas Edison – Invented the electrical light bulb
4
Lesson Outcomes Level 3 – Name a material that conducts electricity and a material that insulates electricity Level 4 – be able to build a circuit using the circuit boards Know the difference between a complete and an incomplete circuit Level 5 – be able to name the components in the circuits and draw symbols for them
5
What is electricity? Electricity is a form of energy It flows through certain materials, called conductors Materials which electricity can’t flow through are called insulators
6
Insulator or conductor? Decide which of these materials can conduct electricity: metal Plastic Wood Water People
7
What is an Electrical Circuit? A circuit is an electrical device that provides a path for electricity to flow
8
Complete or Incomplete? A complete circuit is where all the components of a circuit are joined up and there are no gaps The pathway for electricity is complete
9
Complete or Incomplete? An incomplete circuit is where the pathway for electricity is broken The electricity cannot flow
10
Component Symbols – a cell A cell is what gives the circuit power The long line is the positive end The short line is the negative end
11
Battery A battery is made up of 2 or more cells It gives the circuit power It is important that each cell faces the right way
12
Switch A switch can be open (as shown) or closed When the switch is open, the circuit is incomplete – no electricity can flow What happens when the switch is closed?
13
Bulb / Lamp The lamp lights up when electricity flows through it What would happen to a lamp if there was an open switch in the circuit?
14
Voltmeter The voltmeter measures the voltage of the circuit This is the push of electricity around the circuit
15
Ammeter The ammeter measures the current in the circuit This is the flow of electricity around the circuit
17
Quiz 1.Name 1 material that conducts electricity 2.Name 1 material that is an electrical insulator 3.What does this symbol stand for? 4.What does this symbol stand for?
20
Circuit Diagrams An easy way to draw a circuit is with a circuit diagram Draw a complete circuit Draw an incomplete circuit
21
Circuit Diagrams RULES: 1.Each component has its own symbol 2.Wires connect the components 3.Wires must be drawn with straight lines with a ruler 4.The wires should never cross each other
22
Resistor A resistor can change the amount of current in a circuit
23
Fuse A fuse is a safety device When the current is too high, the fuse breaks
24
Motor A motor can be fitted into a circuit What do you think happens to a motor in a complete circuit?
