WHAT IS KARATE Karate can also be described as a martial art, or fighting method, involving a variety of techniques, including blocks, strikes and throws. Karate practice is divided into three aspects: kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). The word karate is a combination of two Japanese characters: kara, meaning empty, and te, meaning hand; thus, karate means "empty hand." Adding the suffix "-do" (pronounced "doe"), meaning "way," i.e., karate-do, implies karate as a total way of life that goes well beyond the self-defense applications. In traditional karate-do, we always keep in mind that the true opponent is oneself.

HOW TO DO Karate classes are held in a dojo and are instructed by the kancho (founder), shihan (teacher), sempi (black belt /younger helper). At each karate class we always begin by bowing to show respect. To start the class we always do some warming up exercises such as running on the spot, stretching & doing the splits ect. After the warm ups we would do as the instructor has planned either if its kumite (fighting), kata(form) or just running over the basics. At the end of the class all students must return to were they started the class to end the class with a bow as they did at the start of the class.
