Outline & Objectives AACR2 – MARC21 – RDA RDA MARC21 How will RDA change MARC? Proposed new codes MAP: MARC – RDA Proposed new fields Summary Conclusion
3
AACR2 – MARC21 - RDA AACR2 and MARC 21 are two different “standards” designed for two different purposes. AACR2 is the world’s most used content standard for bibliographic description and access. MARC 21 is largely an encoding standard. MARC 21 is only one possible schema for encoding records created using RDA, but it will also be possible to encode records created using RDA in other schemas, such as Dublin Core. RDA is being developed only as a content standard rather than an encoding standard. RDA will contain guidelines for choosing and recording data to include in bibliographic and authority records.
5
RDA A content standard A set of guidelines Focused on user tasks (Search, Identify, Select & Obtain) An online product (with possible print “derivatives”) An international standard An effort to make library catalog part of the Web environment Maybe used with encoding schemas such as MARC or Dublin Core An attempt to improve the way we describe relationships
6
Rick Block on MARC: Unlike some of his colleagues, he believes the MARC record has a future. He points out the example that Columbia has invested a great deal in it, even in its electronic displays. “We have millions of records in MARC,” says Block, “so I don’t think it will go away” Library Journal Nov. 15, 2008
8
MARC 21 MARC – MAchine-Readable Cataloging Mechanism by which computers exchange use interpret bibliographic information data elements Foundation of most library catalogs MARC – USMARC (1980’s) – MARC21 (1990’s)
9
How will RDA change MARC? RDA/MARC Working Group is to propose changes to MARC21 to accommodate encoding RDA data MARC is only one possible encoding schema for RDA RDA include mappings to MARC (appendix D)
10
Richness of MARC MARC – approximately 2000 elements Approximately 200 fields Approximately 1800 subfields The MARC richness/complexity is not fully exploited yet
11
Proposed new codes Additions to some 007 and 008 code lists For example: Non-projected graphic 007/01 (special material designation) k – computer card in electronic resources d – disc type unspecified in electronic resources e – disc cartridge, type unspecified in electronic resources Non-projected graphic 007/04 (primary support material) v – leather n – vellum i – plastic Music 008/20 (format of music) h – chorus score i – condensed score j – performer-conductor part

15
100 – Author Entry under the first author regardless of the number of authors Only under an author who shares the responsibility for the whole work, not the first work in the collection The compiler continue to be the main entry for compilations such as bibliographies and indexes The relationship of an author to the first title in under that authors name in an OPAC hit list may differ from the relationship – prefer not to use relator code
16
110 – Corporate body as main entry Treaties are entered under the first country mentioned, regardless of number or alphabetical order
17
130 – Uniform title as main entry Spell out O.T. and N.T. e.g. 130|aBible|pGenesis|lEnglish|f1955 130|aBible|pOld Testament|lHebrew…
18
2xx Use square brackets only for information not found in the item, regardless of source within the item. Brackets do not carry across subfields; bracket each date element separately
19
245 - Title 245 – record all authors given in prime source in 245|c In older records the title is the main entry – there’s no 100 field. RDA change: use the first author mentioned as 100. Do not supply [sic] after errors. Only use brackets for information from outside the resource. |h[GMD]: 336 - 338
20
246 Alternate title Alternate title which represents the whole work: 246 31 |a Parallel title 246 14 |a Cover title 246 15 |a Added title page title 246 1 |i At head of title:|aPhrase at head of title
21
250 – Edition statement Transcribe rather than abbreviate, e.g. 250 |aSecond edition.
22
260 - Imprint Transcribe jurisdiction as found, using abbreviations only if abbreviated in the source. Transcribe publishers as found, do not shorten or omit publishers’ names.
23
300 - Collation Insert ISBN punctuation if lacking Do not use abbreviations – spell out the pages, volumes, illustrations, but “cm.” is considered a symbol therefore not an abbreviation; “hr” is also still used for duration. e.g. 3 volumes:|billustrated. ;|c28 cm. Use patron familiar terms for e.g. CD, CD-ROM, DVD, DVD-ROM and VHS.
24
4XX 440 – obsolete change to 490 1 and cut and paste into 830 0 490 – Transcribe |v terms and numbers as found on item
25
5XX Notes are free form – ISBD punctuation does not apply. 505 Take advantage of the fact that 505 is repeating – do it for each volume or named major part
26
700 Trace all authors as opposed to only 2 nd and 3 rd. Relator codes will be deleted on export of the item because the relationship of an author’s name in the OPAC hitlist may differ from the relationship to subsequent title’s
27
830 – Series Transcribe |v terms and numbers as found on item
28
Proposed new fields and subfields RDA introduces three new fields of description to replace General Material Designators (GMD) Content – RDA core element Media type – RDA optional element Carrier – RDA core element
29
Content, media type and carrier (1) New fields: 336 (content type) 337 (media type) 336-338 replace GMD 338 (carrier type) (i.e. 245|h) New subfields : (various fields)|d or |f or |u – relationship designators –
30
Content, media type and carrier (2) Examples: Content: still image, text, notated music… Media type: audio, projected, unmediated… Carrier: microfiche audio disc, online resource…. Terms vs code: Content:still image – [sti]text = [txt] Media type:audio = [a]unmediated = [u] Carrier:microfisce = [me]audio disc = [ad]
31
Using MARC 336 - 338 Content type: 336 (R) 336##|aperformed music|2rdacontent 336##|atwo-dimensional moving image|2rdacontent 336##|atext|2rdacontent Media type: 337 (R) remember media type is optional in RDA 337##|aaudio|2rdamedia 337##|avideo|2rdameida|liner notes 337##|aunmediated|2rdamedia Carrier: 338 (R) 338##|aaudio disc|2rdacarrier 338##|avideo disc|2rdacarrier 338##|asheet|2rdacarrier
32
Using MARC 336 - 338 100 1 |aAbrahamsen, Hans,|d2951- 245 10|aStratifications ; Nacht und Trompeten ; Concerto for piano and orchestra ; recompositions /|c Hans Abraham. GMD replaced by: Content type – performed music media type – audio carrier type – audio disc 1|aperformed music|2rda content 2|aaudio|2rda media 3|aaudio disc|2rda carrier
33
Summary Many changes were approved at MARBI in January 2009 and will be listed on the online version of MARC A few more will be discussed at MARBI in July 2009 More subfields for 033 and 518 Encoding Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI’s) to link to registries of controlled values MARC 21 update no. 10 will be officially published later this year
34
Conclusion Library of Congress: online MARC21 as official We can start creating RDA records after the official publication of MARC21 update 10. The data elements should be available on our systems. Should start communities of practice. Experimentation: Record creation process/workflows Display Compatibility of data derived form a digital source
