SURVIVAL Survival is the name given to the effort we make to stay alive. Staying alive means looking after ourselves whatever the circumstances are. What do we need in order to survive?

Fire Why have a fire? Signalling Tool (smoke/fire) Keeping Warm Boiling Water Cooking Food Smoke keeps bugs away Keeps Morale Up - sing round it!

Shelter Provides relief from elements, Sun / Heat – Hyperthermia / Sunstroke Cold / Wet – Hypothermia Wind – Exposure / Wind Burn / Hypothermia Suffering from any of these SEVERELY affects your chances of survival.

Shelter Apart from the weather, what else does shelter protect you from? Insects Reptiles Animals

Shelter What could you use for a shelter? Wood frame and Leaves Grasses (Thatch) Bivouac (Bivvy) / Basher Hammock Igloo / Snow hole

Sustenance Food and Water: What’s the survival time without food? How long can you survive without water? Several days to a couple of weeks. 2-3 days at the absolute most.

Sustenance Recognising what’s safe to eat and drink, How do you make Water safe to drink? How would you go about collecting food and water? Boiling / Sterilising Tablets. Foraging – Nuts & Fruit Trap – Small Animals Water – Plastic Bag round Leaves / Collect Rainfall from Tree Leaves

First Aid Always take a First Aid kit with you! Use it sparingly Improvise – you could use items for something else (safety pin as a fishing hook)

Survival Kit What would you have in your Survival Kit? Wire Saw Knife Fishing Hook & Line Cotton Wool (Tinder and padding) Small Compass Water purifying tablets Waterproof Matches & Flint/Steel (2 Methods of firelighting) Plastic bag (for water collecting) What else could you put in the kit?
