2 Targets & Warm Up Targets: Students will identify the parts of a flower. Students will discover the role of a flower. Students will determine how the parts help a flower complete its role. Warm Up: What does a flower do? What are its parts?

5 What is the role of a flower? Flowers make seeds in flowering plants. The seeds grow into new plants. Reproduction: How plants make new seeds

6 Flowers have 4 main parts (pg. 55) Petals Sepals Pistil (Ovary) Stamen

7 Parts of a Flower Pistil Stamen Petal Sepals Ovary (Part of the pistil)

8 Parts of Flowers Petals – Protect the parts of the flower that make seeds Sepals – Small, green leaves; cover and protect the flower Pistil – Female part; produces eggs cells Stamens – Male part; make pollen that has sperm cells Ovary – Where fertilization occurs

9 Reproduction Video Listen for the parts of the plant. Listen for the words pollination and fertilization.

10 Pollination & Fertilization (pg. 56) Read to find out… – What is pollination? How does it happen? – What is fertilization? How does it happen?

11 Pollination What is it? The movement of pollen from stamen to pistil How does it happen? Pollen from the stamens rubs off on an animal’s body. When the animal goes to the next plant, it carries the pollen to the pistil of the next flower.

12 Fertilization What is it? When the sperm cell from the pollen and egg cell combine inside the ovary How does it happen? When the pollen lands on the pistil, the sperm cells travel down to the egg cells in the ovary.
