1 Draw a composite shape that contains two rectangles
Draw a composite shape that contains two rectangles. One should have b=4in and h=9in. The other will have b=3in and h=12in. What is the total area?

2 agenda 1). You will receive a number That determines what group and what number you will be responsible to demonstrate to the class. 2). Complete #3,4,5 3). Exit ticket

3 Group work Each group will get one large sheet of paper
Step 1. List every shape within the composite figure Step 2. next to every shape list the formula to find area Step3. find the area of each shape Step 4. add each shape’s area to find the total area * make sure that you list all these steps on the paper, so you can present to the class

4 Area of Composite Figure 192ft² + 48ft² = 240ft²
Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 24 x 8 A = 192ft² Area of Triangle A = ½ x b x h A = ½ x 24 x 4 A = 12 x 4 A = 48ft²

5 Area of Composite Figure 48cm² + 48cm² + 161cm² + 36cm² = 293cm²
Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 8 x 6 A = 48cm² Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 8 x 6 A = 48cm² Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 23 x 7 A = 161cm² Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 18 x 2 A = 36cm² Area of Composite Figure 48cm² + 48cm² + 161cm² + 36cm² = 293cm²

6 Area of Composite Figure 12in² + 100in² = 112in²
Area of Triangle A = ½ x b x h A = ½ x 4 x 6 A = 2 x 6 A = 12in² Area of Composite Figure 12in² + 100in² = 112in² Area of Square A = b x h A = 10 x 10 A = 100in²

7 200ft² + 78.5ft² = 278.5ft² Area of 2 Semi-Circles form a circle…
Diameter: 10ft Radius: 5ft A = ∏ x r² A = 3.14 x 5² A = 3.14 x 25 A = 78.5 ft² Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 20 x 10 A = 200 ft²

8 210ft² ft² = ft² Area of Semi-Circle (find area of circle & divide by 2) Diameter: 12.0ft Radius: 6ft A = ∏ x r² A = 3.14 x 6² A = 3.14 x 36 A = ft² ÷ 2 = A semi circle = 56.52 Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 17.5 x 12 A = 210 ft²

9 Shauna plans to put in wall-to-wall carpet in her bedroom
Shauna plans to put in wall-to-wall carpet in her bedroom. She measures the dimensions of her bedroom and sketches up the floor plan shown below. How many square meters of carpet does Shauna need to cover the entire area of her bedroom floor? 8.64m² ² = 9.36m² Shauna needs 9.36 square meters of carpet to cover her entire area of her bedroom floor. Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 3.6 x 2.4 A = 8.64 m² Area of Rectangle A = b x h A = 0.6 x 1.2 A = 0.72 m²

10 assignment Complete # 3-5 on next page in worksheet

11 Annie will need 28 square feet of AstroTurn.
Annie’s dog is allergic to grass, so Annie is installing AstroTurn on the floor of his doghouse. The picture below, which is measured in feet, represents the floor plan of his doghouse. How many square feet of AstroTurn will Annie need? 16ft² + 12ft² = 28ft² Area of Square A = b x h A = 4 x 4 A = 16 ft² Area of Trapezoid A = ½ (b + b) x h A = ½ (4 + 2) x 4 A = ½ (6) x 4 A = 3 x 4 A = 12 ft² Annie will need 28 square feet of AstroTurn.

12 Lucy will need 180 square inches of fabric to make 10 figures
Lucy is making a quilt. She needs to create 10 figures exactly the same size and shape as the figure below, which is measured in inches. How many square inches of fabric will her figure measure in total? Lucy will need 180 square inches of fabric to make 10 figures Area of Trapezoid A = ½ (b + b) x h A = ½ (9 + 3) x 3 A = ½ (12) x 3 A = 6 x 3 A one figure= 18 in² 18 x 10 = 180in²

13 Green Middle School is selling flags to support their basketball team
Green Middle School is selling flags to support their basketball team. The school is going to create 150 flags exactly the same size and shape as the figure below, which is measured in feet. How many total square feet of fabric will be needed to create all of Green Middle School’s flags? Area of Trapezoid A = ½ (b + b) x h A = ½ (12 + 5) x 5 A = ½ (17) x 5 A = 8.5 x 5 A one figure= 42.5 ft² 42.5 x 150 = 750ft² They will need 750 square feet of fabric to make 150 flags that are exactly the same size.

14 A stop sign is an octagon (i. e
A stop sign is an octagon (i.e., a polygon with eight sides) with eight equal sides and eight equal angles. The dimensions of the octagon are given. One side of the stop sign is to be painted red. If Timmy has enough paint to paint 500 ft2, can he paint 100 stop signs? Explain your answer. Guiding Help 1.) Calculate the area of each shape 2.) Add all areas together 3.) Multiply the area by 100 4.) Convert square inches into square feet by dividing by 144 5.) Answer the question

15 The Smiths’ are laying down new carpet
The Smiths’ are laying down new carpet. Everything but closets, bathrooms, and the kitchen will have new carpet. How much carpeting must be purchased for the home? Guiding Help 1.) Calculate the area of each room 2.) Add all areas together 3.) Convert square units into square feet by multiplying by 4

16 The Henry family is renovating a few aspects of their home
The Henry family is renovating a few aspects of their home. The following diagram is of a new kitchen countertop. Approximately how many square feet of counter space is there? Guiding Help 1.) Calculate the area of each shape by breaking the kitchen countertop into “familiar shapes” 2.) Add all areas together 3.) Convert square inches into square feet by dividing by 144

17 A landscape company wants to plant lawn seed. A 20 lb
A landscape company wants to plant lawn seed. A 20 lb. bag of lawn seed will cover up to 420 sq. ft. of grass and costs $49.98 plus the 8% sales tax. A scale drawing of a rectangular yard is given. The length of the longest side is 100 ft. The house, driveway, sidewalk, garden areas, and utility pad are shaded. The unshaded area has been prepared for planting grass. How many 20 lb. bags of lawn seed should be ordered, and what is the cost? Guiding Help 1.) Calculate the area of the un-shaded region. 2.) Make sure the area is converted to square feet 3.) Calculate the number of bags needed to purchase (Round up) 4.) Calculate the total cost (including sales tax)

18 Exit ticket List the four area formulas that we have studied so far.
